The curtain falls on the World Offshore Mixed Double Championships, after a week of intense competition punctuated by three thrilling races. World Sailing chose Lorient to host this first edition. Organized by Lorient Grand Large, in partnership with the Fédération Française de Voile (FFVoile), the Yacht Club de France and the Royal Ocean Racing Club, this event saw crews from 16 nations compete. Strong support was provided by partners such as ClasseC30, Cap Regatta and Multiplast/Jeanneau.

From September 24 to October 1, these mixed teams braved particularly demanding weather conditions aboard the Sun Fast 30 One Designs. Violent winds, with gusts exceeding 30 knots and heavy seas of over two meters, forced us to postpone the start of the second semi-final, the “Region Bretagne Race”, as well as the grand final, the “Lorient Agglomération Race”, for a 151 nautical mile race.

Among the highlights of the competition, Loïs Berrehar and Charlotte Yven (FRA) shone in the first semi-final, the “Département du Morbihan Race”, taking first place. Elodie Bonafous and Basile Bourgnon (FRA) took the lead in the second semi-final, showing impressive domination over their rivals.

Solidarity and sportsmanship

The event was also marked by a fine example of sporting solidarity. The prize for fighting spirit was awarded to the Indian crew, forced to abandon the first semi-final due to an injury to Atool Sinha (IND). A strong gesture by Tim Lemeer and Lisa Vos (NZL), who withdrew from the race to come to their aid, was also praised, reminding us that safety and the spirit of mutual aid remain cardinal values in this demanding sport.

A high-voltage final

Last but not least, the Lorient Agglomération Final Race put on a great show on the final tack, with the duo of Maggie Adamson & Cal Finlayson (GBR) taking the title of World Champions in Mixed Doubles Ocean Racing 2024.

An incredibly close finish that kept four teams in contention with just two miles to go!
